Cycle Yourself Into A Cold?

The sad fact is that cyclists are one of the few groups that are more vulnerable to the common cold than other groups.  This is due to two reasons, the first being that people doing repeated exercise will lose weight and build muscle, however one of the ways (there are many) that your body helps you build muscle is to produce tiny amounts of steroids in your system.  This chemical helps you build muscle and endure aches and pains; it does however knock your immune system back a little.  If you eat right (plenty of vitamin C - ascorbic acid) then it will not be a problem, but your temporarily weakened immune system may make you more susceptible to a cold.

The other reason is that your extremities (nose, fingers, and ears) get cold.  The bacteria and viruses that cause the common cold like to breed in a temperature only a few degrees below your body temperature.  These little cold-spots are ideal hot-spots for the common cold to set up shop and build in numbers.

Designers of cycling fashions have been aware of this for years and so create clothing such as cycling trousers, cycling gloves and balaclavas to compensate.  There are styles that use micro fibre, to let air out but keep the warm in.  There’s thermal cycling gear to keep the heat in, and lots of cycling fashions incorporate Lycra and polyesters into the clothes to keep the clothing unrestrictive, but a little more water proof.

It has been long established that cycling gear needs to be protective.  This is why cyclists should wear helmets, and have padded bits on their gloves and trousers.  The more modern winter fashion collections will also protect against the elements. We have all been caught out in the rain one day, and then two days later a cold appears.  This is a bigger threat for a cyclist, because quite often if a cyclist is caught in the rain, they tend to be a fair distance from their home, and they cannot simply wait it out in their car.  So cycling gear that protects against the winter elements is a must.

If you are buying cycling gear online, then look for genuine reviews.  The sorts of things that do not look like the online seller wrote it.  Look for how well the cycling gloves keep in the heat, and if the shirts tear at the seams in the back.  If you are buying from a walk in shop, then try the goods on.  Try the cycling helmet to see if it moves on top, or feels uncomfortable.  Try the cycling gloves to see if they are warm and up to the job.

How to Save Money on Christmas Gifts

When Christmas comes around a lot of us will be dreading the expense involved.  It is a tough time of year for many of us as children these days expect quite a lot.  The truth is that Christmas is a time to spend with family and it really shouldn’t be about how much money you spend.  It is not really necessary to spend a small fortune or get yourself into debt in order to show your loved ones how much you care.  With that in mind, this article aims to give you some suggestions on how you can save a bit of money this Christmas:

Think about a homemade present for your family and friends.  If you are good at baking then you could make some delicious cookies or cakes that you have decorated yourself.  This is always a really welcome type of gift especially if others normally like your cooking.  Another idea is to create jewellery from beads and string.  There are some really great beads out there and if you are creative, you can make some stunning pieces that your loved ones will adore.  Photo gifts can also be really special so you could make a collage or a photo CD with background music.

Think about doing a secret Santa with your family.  If you have a large family then it can work out quite expensive to buy a gift for everyone.  However if you put all the names in a hat and let each person pick out a name then everyone will get a gift and everyone will only have to buy for one person.  You can set a budget that everyone has to stick to and this will make it fairer.

Look for discounts on gifts.  If you live in a city like Nottingham for instance, you could sign up to group discount websites where you could get Nottingham deals every day.  This means that if you are buying for someone else living in your area, you could get them a voucher for a restaurant at a discounted price.  When it comes to Nottingham deals, there are many offers that will be sent your way for gift ideas and the prices are reduced by quite a bit which is a great way to get a fantastic gift at a much cheaper price.

Christmas is a time to spend with your family to relax and unwind.  Gifts are a part of it and no one can deny this but it is never a good idea to get stressed out about not having the money to spend on presents for others.  It really should be about the thought and not the amount that you spend.

Tips on Selecting High Quality Rucksacks

Whether you are a world traveller, experienced backpacker, or mountain climber, you are probably aware of the importance of having a well-designed rucksack to store your belongings. Rucksacks can be found in all sorts of shapes and sizes and built to fit a variety of different needs. They can be designed from canvas, polyester, nylon, and other specially-designed fabrics built to withstand large weight quantities and external influences that could compromise the materials of a poorly constructed backpack. If you are interested in buying a new rucksack for whatever reason, here are some tips on how to find one that will last for a long time.

Where to find a quality rucksack

Quality rucksacks are usually manufactured by higher end brand names. If you were to purchase a random rucksack off the shelf of a department store, you might find that although the bag serves its purpose for a certain amount of time, noticeable problems appear as time progresses. Common problems include faulty zippers, material tears, and the dreaded breakage of one or more back straps. You can avoid these problems most of the time by choosing to purchase only from manufacturers that have proven themselves to be quality suppliers of outdoor backpacking products. In the event that you would rather just repair a broken rucksack or improve your existing backpack's durability, you will find that a sewing kit could help you out in more ways than one. Some people even sew their backpacks with fishing line, helping to ensure that material tearing under rough conditions becomes a certified improbability.

If you need space for a variety of items, you might want to consider purchasing a rucksack with an added hip belt. A hip belt helps to transfer the majority of the rucksack's load into the hips instead of upper back, making it easier to carry heavier weight over long distances. This will considerably lower the amount of time it takes for you to begin fatiguing during a long hike into the mountains. A combined hip belt with sturdy back straps designed to remain comfortable on your upper back muscles (specifically the trapezius) is the type of rucksack you should aim to look for if you are planning to travel long distances on foot.

Good rucksacks can usually be found at specialized sports stores and stores that sell mountaineering equipment. These stores can be located online as well. If you search for rucksacks online, you will likely find a wide range of different stores and manufacturers to choose from. Consider reading the reviews assigned to each specific rucksack model in order to make up your mind about whether or not it is a rucksack that you will want to be wearing on your shoulders over the next few years. Any decision regarding the purchase of a new backpack should ultimately be made with an eye to detail and a good idea of what is and is not good material quality.

How to Tackle OCD

OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) is a condition that can have a serious affect on a person’s day to day life.  The problem for many sufferers of this condition is that others do not take it seriously.  If you are trying to find ways to help you tackle your problem then it is important that you know what you are doing so that you don’t end up making things worse.  There are many different forms of OCD and some people will need to have everything arranged in a certain way, while others are obsessed with washing their hands for example.  Some people find that when they are cooking, they have to ensure that every item of food that they chop is the exact same size.  For those sufferers there is an OCD chopping board which will help but what about people with other forms of OCD?  What help is available to them?

OCD will usually begin with certain obsessions which are thoughts that can be uncontrollable and often unpleasant.  It is these thoughts that compel the sufferer to have compulsions.  Compulsions are repeated habits that are carried out to help the sufferer distract him or herself from the obsession.

There are a few techniques that you can adopt to help with your OCD and which should help to make your condition more bearable.  If you follow the tips below, then you should be on the way to overcoming this condition.

The best way to tackle OCD is to confront the obsession that is causing the compulsive behaviour or panic.  Getting to the root of the problem is the best way to deal with it.  The way to do this is to try and force yourself to think about the things that cause the obsessive behaviour. If you cannot do this then you need to put yourself into a scenario that will no doubt cause you to have your obsessive thoughts.

Once you are thinking about the obsessive thoughts, you will probably feel compelled to carry out your usual habits or behaviour in order to stop the thoughts.  However, you need to force yourself to refrain from carrying out the compulsive behaviour.

What You Can Do to Prepare Your Car for Sale

You may have decided that the time is right to buy a new car and if this is the case you might have to think about selling off your old car.  You could always take your current car with you when you buy your new car so that you can get a trade in price from the car dealer.  However, we all know that the price you get from a car dealer is going to be lower than what you could get if you were to sell your car in a private sale.

If you are going to sell your car privately then you will want to make sure that you get the best price for it and if this is the case then you need to do all you can to prepare your car before you try to sell it.  This could involve getting minor repairs done to it or buying a few accessories such as exhaust trims to make the car look better.  The following are some of the ways that you can prepare your car for sale:
You are obviously going to get a better price for your car if it is in good condition.

You need to make sure that your car is spotless both inside and out.  Car buyers will look all over the car to make sure it is up to the standard they are looking for and they may even decide to look underneath the car so you might want to get the power hose out and give the underneath a good clean.  If your car is a mess then you will find it hard to sell it or if someone does want to buy it, they are going to offer a reduced price for it which is not what you want.• Make sure you have all the relevant paperwork ready before you try to sell the car.

You are going to have to have all of this paperwork to hand as many buyers will want to see it.  And if someone comes to view the car and wants to take it there and then, you will have to have this documentation ready or you could miss out on the sale.• If there are any minor repairs that need to be done to the car then maybe it would be worthwhile getting them done before you sell the car.

If buyers see any dents or scratches on the car, they will use them as a way to get the price down.• Buy some accessories which may make the car look better such as exhaust trims and new car seat covers.  You may also want to replace the tyres on the car if the tread is quite worn as this can give a bad impression.

Paperwork - A Thing Of The Past?

The pace that technology is growing and evolving these days is truly astounding. Things such as the internet have made our lives so much easier by giving us a world of knowledge at our finger tips; we can literally access information on virtually anything in the click of a button. It really is amazing stuff, and it is rendering so many relics of the past obsolete. Whether or not this is a bad thing is up for debate. Many older people will get a little nostalgic from time to time doing things the old way, but for the younger generations this is their way of life and they are really making the most of it.

Things such as the hard copy phone book and business directory have nearly been rendered completely obsolete by the information revolution, and it’s easy to see why; when you once would have had to go and open up a big book, find the right page and then find the right number, you can now simply enter what or who it is you are after, and be given the results nearly instantly. Do people miss these things? I am not too sure to be honest; I can’t see why anyone would be disappointed in them being replaced with something that is so much easier, quicker and up to the minute.

But it is not just little things like the information directories that are being knocked into history; even the postal system is not immune to the technological revolution. A once great symbol of national prosperity, posting letters has increasingly become a thing of the past with the rapid rise of email and instant messaging. I mean let’s face it, would you rather pay for a stamp to send an envelope to someone who will receive it a day or two later, or send an email for free that they will receive instantly? Easy one, I know. But some people do still enjoy the thought of a nice letter or card, and I can see how they can hold deep sentimental value for some people. I’m not sure that postal mail will ever truly become obsolete, but it has definitely played a much smaller role in the world of communications over the last few years.

So whether you are relishing or loathing the technology revolution, be it due to the demise of your beloved business directory, or because your grandson never sends a card any more, one thing is for sure: it’s not stopping and it is only going to get bigger. In ten years from now, it will probably be the driving force of the whole planet, so it’s probably time to at least learn how to use it properly!
